Show Summary

Book, Music and Lyrics by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey

Dust off your leather jackets, pull on your bobby-socks and take a trip to a simpler time as Danny and Sandy fall in love all over again.

Here is Rydell High’s senior class of 1959: duck-tailed, hot-rodding “Burger Palace Boys” and their gum-snapping, hip-shaking “Pink Ladies” in bobby sox and pedal pushers, evoking the look and sound of the 1950s in this rollicking musical. Head “greaser” Danny Zuko and new girl Sandy Dumbrowski try to relive the high romance of their “Summer Nights” as the rest of the gang sings and dances its way through such songs as “Greased Lightnin’,” “It’s Raining on Prom Night,” “Alone at the Drive-In Movie”.

So throw your mittens around your kittens and hand jive the night away with the show that’ll make you want to stand up and shout, ‘A-wop-bop-a-loo-bop, a-wop-bam-boom!

“A lively and funny musical-as well as the dancingest one in town. It’s a winner […] the songs are dandies [that portray] the early rockers with zip and charm. The sheer energy of Grease carries all before it.” – New York Daily News

Grease is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French Inc., a Concord Theatricals Company

Joyce’s association with Grease dates back to NBC’s competition reality show ‘Grease: ‘You’re The One That I Want! that launched the careers of Laura Osnes (Sandy) and Max Crumm (Danny) and worked alongside the 3 onscreen judges, including the creator/writer of Grease, Jim Jacobs. After serving as Associate for the Broadway revival in 2007 that starred the winners of the reality show, Joyce went on to rechoreograph and restage two national tours of Grease. At The Cape Playhouse, Joyce directed the 2019 production of A Chorus Line during an unprecedented year where Mother Nature wreaked havoc on the Cape with 3 tornados! Miraculously, the Playhouse was able to keep the lights on and the curtain up, and the show never missed a beat. Prior to that fun filled summer, Joyce choreographed South Pacific at the Playhouse. Other notable credits include, Associate Choreographer for Beautiful: The Carole King Musical on Broadway and restaging and choreographing companies in Japan, Australia and US National Tours along with directing nationally televised performances of ‘Beautiful’ on ‘America’s Got Talent’, ‘Dancing With The Stars’ and ‘A Capitol Fourth 2019’ on PBS, starring Carole King herself. For over 20 years Joyce was a performer on Broadway before hanging up her lashes and heels to direct and choreograph. She has been lucky to work closely with many legends and stars including, Julie Andrews, Joel Grey, Natasha Richardson, Alan Cumming, Harry Connick Jr, Rosie O’Donnell, Brooke Shields, Sarah Jessica Parker, Rob Marshall, Susan Stroman, Kathleen Marshall, Sam Mendes, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Sutton Foster, to name a few.

As a choreographer, he strives to bring the essence of what he has learned from these Broadway greats to whatever project he’s working on. While performing has always been his first love, he often finds himself creating steps for dancers and movers of all skills and backgrounds. This year, he created dance pieces both for the competition dance circuit, as well as for the renowned Maine State Ballet. He has also worked simultaneously as a performer and a choreographer at the Ivoryton Playhouse. He often teaches dance at many locations including studios, conservatories, colleges and other institutions where he is constantly creating new movement and dance numbers. This is his second time at Cape Playhouse, having reimagined much of the choreography for A Chorus Line in 2017. He is thrilled to be back again, collaborating with Grease! director, Joyce Chittick, who also happens to be his wife and the mother of his 8 year old daughter, Lena.

Jim Jacobs
Book, Music, and Lyrics

Jim who created Grease (in 1970) with Warren Casey was born and raised on the mean streets of Chicag’s far northwest side. During the golden era of rock n’ roll (1956-1961) he was a guitar playing “greaser” student at Taft High School. In 1963, Jacobs met Warren Casey when they were both cast in a local theatre production of A Shot in the Dark, seven years later they wrote what was to become one of the greatest musicals of all time. Grease opened in 1971 in a former trolly barn called the Kingston Mines Theatre in Cicago. A year later, Grease made it to Broadway and “Greasemania” took off resulting in one of the longest running shows in Broadway history. The 1978 movie became and remains the highest grossing movie musical of all time. Originally an actor, Jacobs has been seen on television, in motion pictures, regional theatre, national tours, and on Broadway. He is the co-author of several other plays and musicals including Island of Lost Coeds, a musical spoof of the low budget sci-fi/horror jungle movies of the 1950s, which he wrote with Warren Casty. In May 2014, Jacobs was presented with an honorary doctorate degree from Columbia College in Chicago. He currently resides in Southern California and remains active in the theatre, especially with the American Theatre Company of Chicago.

Warren Casey
Book, Music, and Lyrics

Warren was born in Yonkers, New York, and attended Syracuse University. During the late 50s he learned all about “greasers” while working as an art teacher in upstate New York. He moved to Chicago in 1962, where he hoped to pursue an acting career. He appeared in dozens of productions, including creating the role of Bernie Litko in David Mamet’s Sexual Perversity in Chicago. He supported himself with jobs in retail, including working as an assistant manager of a chain of apparel stores, and as a record salesman. In the meantime, he taught himself how to play the guitar and began writing songs. Mr. Casey acted with the Chicago Stage Guild (where he met Jim Jacobs), the Old Town Players, and the Kingston Mines Theatre. The latter company staged the original production of Grease which he wrote with Jim Jacobs. After the incredible success of both musicals and the movie, the two collaborated on Island of Lost Coeds, a musical satire of the B-movies of the 1950s. Mr. Casey died in 1988.
