YANKEE MAGAZINE APPLAUDS LOCAL ESTABLISHMENT
Cape Playhouse Receives Editors’ Choice Honor
DENNIS, MA (July 1, 2007) — The Cape Playhouse today announced it was selected as an “Editors’ Choice” in the 2007 Special Travel Issue of Yankee Magazine. Yankee’s trusted endorsement will be recommended to nearly 2 million readers this spring, summer, and fall.
Yankee’s Special Travel Issue uncovers the destinations and activities that make the region a hot spot for spring escapes, summer fun, and fall getaways for New Englanders and visitors alike. The Editors’ Choice recommendation singles out those establishments Yankee’s editors feel no visitor should miss.
“Readers often point out that the recipients of the Editors’ Choice endorsement represent the rustic, the refined, and everything in between, then ask what criteria we use to select them,” said Mel Allen, editor of Yankee. “Whether it’s a farmstand, a lobster shack with paper plates, or a restaurant that serves its meals on fine china, they all share a singular quality. These are places that travelers will remember, that locals love, and that promise visitors the opportunity to experience New England’s unique character firsthand.”
For eighty-one years, the legendary Cape Playhouse has been bringing Broadway actors and creative talent to Cape Cod. Often referred to as the “Birthplace of the Stars”, the Cape Playhouse has attracted a long litany of famous actors since its inception in 1927. The list reads like a veritable ‘who’s who’ of stage and screen. Over the years, the Cape Playhouse has gained a reputation for producing quality, professional entertainment and each year thousands continue to enjoy superb shows at “America’s Oldest Professional Summer Theatre.”
The Cape Playhouse will also be recommended on NewEngland.com, Yankee’s travel Web site and companion to the magazine. NewEngland.com offers visitors the tools they need to plan their travels and the opportunity to learn more about the region as a whole and the places celebrated in Yankee.
At NewEngland.com visitors can listen to travel podcasts, view Web cams, send e-cards, consult additional travel stories, converse with and pose questions to other fans of the season in an online travelers’ forum, and find the perfect attractions, restaurants, classic destinations, inns and lodging establishments, events, and shops in Yankee’s comprehensive travelers’ database.

America’s longest running professional summer theatre, The Cape Playhouse will celebrate its 81st Anniversary Season starting June 18th and will feature six main-stage productions with performances slated through September 8th. “This season is about two things – pure entertainment and great fun!” notes Producing Artistic Director Evans Haile. “These shows feature memorable characters in surroundings that range from glamorous and madcap to mysterious and divinely decadent.” Again for this summer, Haile has arranged for some of the most exciting talent from Broadway to grace the Cape Playhouse stage—prompting what the New York Times acknowledged, “Where Broadway stars go to summer.”
“2 Pianos 4 Hands” follows the fifteen-year path of two very talented pianists, Ted and Richard, and their love/hate relationship with the piano – from dreaded lessons and awful teachers as children, to terrifying auditions for upper-echelon schools. The two ardently work towards their dream of concert success amidst the pressures of pushy parents, eccentric teachers, hours of repetitive practice, stage fright, the agony of competitions and their dreams of greatness. With music ranging from classical to pop, Bach to Billy Joel, “2 Pianos 4 Hands” captures the humor of learning to play the piano and the humbleness of learning how to let go of a dream. Written by Ted Dykstra and Richard Greenblatt, with direction by Tom Frey, Artistic Director Evans Haile and three-time Richard Rodgers Award-winner Andrew Gerle (The Gift) will take on the lead roles. Performances are set to begin on June 18th. (June 18th through 30th)
Direct from its successful world premiere, “Regrets Only,” written by Paul Rudnick follows up on July 2nd. “Regrets Only” is a screwball comedy for the 21st century. Take a New York powerhouse attorney, his socialite wife and a world famous fashion designer. Add a maid, a wedding, the President of the United States and stir vigorously. The result is this thoroughly
entertaining comedy that is delightful, delicious, smart and witty! James Brennan will direct the cast featuring Tony nominee Dee Hoty (Footloose), Theatre World Award-winner Joel Higgins (Shenandoah) and Tony nominee Harry Groener (Crazy For You). (July 2nd through 14th)
The season continues with the Tony Award-winning musical, “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” Long-legged show girls, high-tapping production numbers, soaring melodies and colorful villains bring the flapper era to life in this madcap song-and-dance spectacular. Terry Burrell (The Threepenny Opera), Andrea Chamberlain (The Drowsy Chaperone) and Andrew Rannels (Hairspray) will star in this Tony Award winner for Best Musical. Mark Martino will direct, Denis Jones will choreograph and Phil Reno will serve as musical director. Based on the 1967 Academy Award-nominated film, “Thoroughly Modern Millie” took Broadway by “tap-dancing” storm and will enchant audiences of all ages. (July 16th through 28th)
Celebrate the decade that brought us The Supremes, Connie Francis, The Shirelles, Petula Clark and Aretha Franklin – “Beehive” journeys down memory lane with over 40 hits from the 60s and 70s. Relive the high, riveting energy of these impressionable female recording artists and the music of this era with this light-hearted, fun-filled production that reminds us of love and rock ‘n roll. “Beehive” will be directed and choreographed by Mark Martino. (July 30th through August 11th)
“Corpse!,” the award-winning play by Gerald Moon begins on August 13th. Brent Harris (The Beard of Avon) and Brad Bellamy (The Beard of Avon) return to star in this comedy thriller full of twists, turns and hijinks where sibling rivalry is taken to the extreme! An out-of-work actor employs a pleasant yet shifty man to do away with his sophisticated, wealthy identical twin brother so he can assume his identity and inherit his fortune. You’ll never guess what happens with his ‘fool proof’ plan! “Corpse!” will be directed by Russell Treyz. (August 13th through 25th)
The season concludes with Tony Award Nominee “Lend Me a Tenor,” Ken Ludwig’s hilarious farce of mistaken identity. Slamming doors and mistaken identities lead to non-stop laugh-out-loud comedy. A famous tenor has been scheduled to perform. When he oversleeps due to too much wine and a double dose of tranquilizers, the company thinks he is dead and replaces him with an imposter. It might have worked, but then he awakens to multiple misunderstandings, merriment and chaos! Pamela Hunt will direct the all-star cast including Judy Blazer (Lovemusik), Jeff Brooks (Beauty and the Beast), Jennifer Cody (The Pajama Game), Robert Cuccioli (Jekyll & Hyde), Hunter Foster (Urinetown), Leah Hocking (Hairspray) and Virginia Seidel (Face The Music). (August 27th through September 8th)
